Cerdic (a version of the Welsh name Caradoc) was the King of the West Saxons (West Seaxe) from 519 to 534. He founded the kingdom of the West Saxons and is believed to be the ancestor of its subsequent kings.
The early history of the region is not clear, although Cerdic is believed to have landed in Hampshire in around 495 with his son Cynric.
He is said to have fought against and killed a British king ( Remember the Old British were Bretons,Welsh, Cornish, Scots, Cumbrians, Strathclyde Britons, and Picts,), whose name was Natanleod, at Netley Marsh in Hampshire in 508 and to have fought another battle at Cerdicesleag in 519, after which he became first king of West Saxons. Cerdic is said to have died in 534 and was succeeded by his son Cynric.
