Saint Hilda of Whitby was one of the most significant figures of the early medieval period. Her name was actually not Hilda, but Hild. She was of royal lineage, and as the Abbess of Whitby she championed the native English church against St. Wilfrid representing the Roman faction at the Synod of Whitby.
